Chessington CC are very proud to reach 100 Years and plan to use 2019 as a start to the next 100 Years by offering excellent facilities and a great base where to play and learn to play cricket. We thrive on being a pillar in the local community so feel free to join us in our centenary celebrations.
Message from the Chairman (Nick Bailey):
This year marks a fantastic achievement in Chessington Cricket Club being 100 years old. History tells of games before this, but 2018 marks the start of games at the now home of Chessington CC at the Sir Francis Barker Recreation Ground. Sir Francis’s son Arthur donated the ground on the basis it would be used and run by local people for sport. 1928 saw the first pavilion erected, to be replaced by the 1st “Saker” pavilion in 1964. This one burned down, and incredibly was rebuilt by club members within 7 months! Reopening in time for the new 1965 season.
In 1971, we acquired our other ground around the back. To turn the field into a usable cricket pitch then cost £3090, it would be a lot more today! The club has since gone from strength to strength and today sees the Saturday senior sides compete in the Surrey Championship, and operate many Colts and Friendly Xl’s. The spirit that first started the club in 1918 is as much in place today - “ a community club that wants to provide sport and somewhere to socialise for all” Although many many people helped over the years to get the club where it is today, the names of Barker, Watling and Saker are hugely prominent and without them it is safe to say there would be no club as it is today.
