2008 Surrey Championship League Season Draws to a damp close ..... |
|
Last Saturday saw the end of the 2008 League campaign for the 1's, 2's and 4's after the 3's completed their season the week before. What a day it turned out to be with both the 1's and 2's having something to play for on the final day of the season. The first team needed to play and win in their game against Mitcham away in order to keep their chances of promotion alive while hoping Leatherhead would get anything other than a win. As the afternoon took shape and clouds were dodged it was a touch of what might have been as we failed to beat Mitcham away to then find out that Leatherhead were held to a winning draw in a rain affected game. What might have been 2nd and promotion (for a 3rd season on the spin!) we finished a very credible 3rd just missing out on the prospect of Division 2 cricket next year. A fine season though overall with plenty of positives to take into the 2009 season. In contrast, at the other end of the table, the 2's were fighting relegation on the last day of the season against bottom of the league Woking & Horsell in what was a must win game for them. The situation was that any 2 of 5 teams could still go down depending on results so all very much to play for! After losing the toss and being asked to bat it was always going to be an uphill battle as not only were we competing against W&H we were competing against the rain on a thoroughly miserable day in Chessington. As the afternoon developed Chessy managed to hold their nerve to overcome W&H and bowl them out in the penultimate over of the game to give themselves every chance of survival. After other results went their way the end of the season saw the 2's finishing 6th (out of 10) so once again guaranteed another season in Div 3. The 3's finished the season a week earlier due to fewer games played and turned in a very respectable 7th position (out of 17). As their season concluded there wasn't the drama that the two higher XI's enjoyed as mid table always looked likely but with 8 wins and 5 loses and 4 draws and only 40 pts from 2nd place the season was absolutely a successful one for the predominantly youthful 3rd XI. They will hope next year, even with the inevitable pressures around selection, they will be strong enough to push for promotion into the 3rd XI Premier League. Finally the 4th XI. It is fair to say the season did not transpire into quite what the club had expected as they entered into a world of league cricket from the previous exploits of just friendly games. The idea, in principal, is a sound one. Exposing young CCC cricketers to the game of competitive league cricket where winning and losing counts for something while blending in sufficient experienced adult players to help them along the way has got to be a good thing? The problem, as it was clearly exposed after not too many games, was that other clubs in the league did not operate on the same ability & merit based selection that CCC do and as a result some of the cricketers representing other teams 4th XI's could have arguably represented that same club in either the 2nd or even 1st XI! As a result the 4th XI did their very best but regularly found they were outmatched by their opponents and ended the season in last place. |

Presidents Day a Success Even With Adverse Weather! |
|
Even with some rather dodgey weather late in the day Presidents Day 2008 still turned out to be another cracking day with family and friends enjoying excellent food, drink and company while the cricketers did their best to provide some visual entertainment amid the inclement weather on the day. Please read the Presidents remarks on the day below: -
Dear Friends, President’s Day 2008Once again we had the most marvellous President’s Day. It proved to be yet another great success, and I do hope everybody enjoyed themselves and relaxed watching the two games that were going on even if the weather let us down a bit this year. My thanks go to the Cricket Chairman, John Yarnley and also Paul Willis, First Team Captain, for organising the cricket side of the day and to the captains who sorted out their teams and to the guest players who turned out for us Jeff Keene and Tim Rowley umpired, thank you both. The ground was prepared by Brian Whittle, ably assisted by Pete Walter, and it can be seen what pride he takes in this work by the condition of the pitch. Thank you Brian and Pete. It was so nice to see a lot of friends and their families on the day. Catching up on old times and reminiscing about the past at CCC is always part of the day, and long may they continue to join us over the years. It was very refreshing to hear so much laughter in the Club House with stories and anecdotes from the past bringing back fond memories. I did thank a lot of people on the day because without their efforts, the day would just not happen and run as smoothly as it did. Everybody that helped before the day and on the day did a great job, and I personally very much appreciate all the help that was given. Once again the lunch and teas were superb, and special thanks must go to Liz Walter and Heidi Langrish together with their team of helpers. It doesn’t just happen on a day like this, and I know how much hard work and thought goes into providing food for so many people. Yet again the Bar Committee with their excellent staff had their work cut out to supply liquid refreshment to all the thirsty Players and Guests and deserve a very special thank you. Thanks must also go to those people who bought raffle tickets. £272 was raised and this helps towards the expenses for the day. Also thanks to Brian Hutchings and Roy Simpson who donated some of the proceeds of the Football Cards towards the day. Cheques were also handed to me during the day from some of our visitors to go towards Club funds, and these are very much appreciated. Enjoy the rest of the summer, and your sport. This is a great club to belong to and you are all part of it. It can only go from strength to strength with the dedication and hard work that is put into it, and those that work hard for the club are those that are giving you the opportunity to enjoy the particular sports that you are involved in. If you can get involved in any aspect of the Club, please put yourself forward, the rewards are very pleasing. Kindest regards, and thanks for a great day.
